Board of Directors

Aaron Elkins, President
Aaron Elkins has been in the Pet Industry for many years. Aaron is a member of P.I.J.A.C. (Pet Industry Joint Action Council) and holds several certificates for companion animal specialist.

Aaron is the proud pet guardian of Wylie, the 4-year old Chocolate Lab; Fridge, the 9-year old Siamese mix cat; and Gideon, the 3-year old spice finch.

Aaron's' priorities for the HSSC is to establish it as the foremost animal rescue within our county by driving humane law enforcement and rescue agency networking. Additionally Aaron has spearheaded the technology for the HSSC gaining us a grant from GOOGLE and Youtube for Non-Profits.


Lori-Jo Boyd, Chief Financial Officer
Lori-Jo Boyd holds a Masters of Business Administration, and has a professional career in management and accounting and finance.

Lori-Jo has previously served for over 5 years on the Board of Directors for a non-profit agency in the Bay Area.

Lori-Jo believes that together, we can decrease resistance to change by building a bridge of knowledge making the gap between "where we are" and "where we want to be" easier to cross.

Lori-Jo continues to focus on bringing the HSSC into 2010 with advanced accounting controls, and establishing a professional image for the HSSC.


Laurie Daily-Johnston, Director
Laurie came to the HSSC with nearly 30 years of experience in the Animal Rescue industry, with the last 11 years spent specializing in Pit Bull rescue.

Spending time volunteering for organizations such as, The Coalition of Cats & Dogs, Animals at Risk Care Sanctuary, and Alley Cat Guardians, Laurie is a consummate Animal Advocate.

Previously Laurie served on two Boards, California Flyball & agility Association and Modesto Civic Theatre.

Laurie holds a Not-For-Profit Management Certification. Laurie also is our resident Animal Behavior expert.


Renee Jefferis, Director
Renee was born and raised in Modesto. She is a Charter (founding) member of the HSSC. Renee joined the Board of Directors recently to fill a vacancy.

She is a local business member, and has been for the past 11 years, owning Buddy's Mail Room.

She is an enthusiastic supporter of the HSSC and has been invaluable to the continued success of our organization.

Lu-Ann Harrington, Secretary
Lu-Ann has a professional background in administration and finance. She currently has several rescue animals at home.

Her inspiration for her board position is her son Todd harrington, who served as the Manager of Finance on the Finance Committee of the HSSC. Todd passed away on May 9th 2009.

Lu-Ann is the Secretary of the Humane Society of Stanislaus County.

Renee Rhoy, Director
Renee has worked in the non-profit sector for the past 22 years. She has held various roles within her career including: director, volunteer, record keeper, animal care specialist, and paid staffer.

Renee holds a diploma in veterinary assisting and certifications in volunteer management and grant writing.

Over the years she has worked with over 250 different species of animals.

She specializes in neonatal care.

Gary Hunter, Director
Gary is a Stanislaus County native. Early in his life Gary spent time serving in the United States Navy.

Throughout his life he has always had dogs and cats.

Gary was a charter Board member and his interest in a no/low kill shelter is his driving force.

Gary is a local businessman.
